SB 5 petition drive underway

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Dayton firefighters are working to get Senate Bill 5 on the November ballot.

They kicked off a month long drive Tuesday to help them reach the required 231,000 signatures needed to get a referendum.

The firefighters are working with the We are Ohio Campaign.

They've set up a drive thru signing tent at Veterans Park in Dayton.

Governor Kasich signed Senate Bill 5 into law in March. It bans striking and restricts collective bargaining rights for more than 300,000 teachers, police, firefighters and others public employees.

Supporters say Senate Bill 5 will ensure that communities can balance their budgets and avoid large-scale layoffs.

But, not everyone is convinced and that's why petitioners want to have the final say at the polls.

The firefighters will be out every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 to 2 for the next 4 weeks collecting signatures.

They're located on Veterans Parkway just north of the Stewart Street Bridge off Patterson Boulevard.
