DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese. That's the latest statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the health condition related to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.
The study shows while 35.7 percent of adults nationwide suffer, obesity varies across states and regions.
The thinnest state is Colorado with a rate of 20.7 percent. Mississippi rounds out the bottom with 34.9. Ohio ranks at 29.6 percent, a little bit heavier from the last count of 29.2.
Regionally, The South had the highest prevalence of obesity, followed by the Midwest, the Northeast, and the West.
The CDC says in 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.
