OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - A Miami University professor remembers Paul Ryan as an already conservative thinker who loved to ask questions and learn more about economic theories.

Economics professor Rich Hart had Ryan in class some 20 years before the Wisconsin congressman became Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick Saturday. He says Ryan came to college fundamentally conservative, and at the Ohio college honed his beliefs in limited government and the importance of individual freedoms

Hart says Ryan stood out as not only very smart, but intellectually curious as a student.

Ryan studied economics and political science at Miami, graduating in 1992. He returned to campus in 2009 as commencement speaker, saying his time at Miami helped him find himself and put him on the path to public service after his father's death.
