HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - A Middletown couple accused of locking 12-year-old daughter in the basement were found guilty of child endangering on Friday.
Forty-year-old Shawn Blackston and 37-year-old Joanna Blackston of Middletown were charged after children services caseworkers acting on a tip found the girl July 3, 2012.
The girl said in court that she was locked in the basement, denied food and punished with cold showers.
Joanna Blackston said that the girl needed discipline and that the door was locked to keep toddlers in the home from falling down stairs.
The girl and her six minor siblings, ranging in age from 2 to 17, were placed in foster care.
A trial is scheduled in December before a different judge in Butler County Juvenile Court to determine if the children will be reunited with their parents.
