CLEVELAND (AP) - American nuns are getting some support in one Ohio city.
Nuns in this country are under scrutiny by the Vatican. But about 180 people turned out to support them at a prayer vigil Tuesday night at a Roman Catholic church on Cleveland's west side.
The vigil marked the opening day of a four-day convention in St. Louis of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. That organization represents more than 80 percent of the 57,000 Catholic sisters in the United States.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports that the vigil was one of many throughout the country in support of the nuns' conference.
The Vatican has accused American nuns of having ignored various church doctrines and pushing "certain radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith."
