Learning to fire in real-life scenarios

WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WDTN) - The situation is a homeowner's worst nightmare, finding a burglar in your house.

It's the reason why many get a gun in the first place.

But would you know how to react?

"We put people in high stress situations against real live role players," says Shoot Extreme's Primary Instructor Brad Scheidt.

Workers at Shoot Extreme in West Chester go beyond your normal shoot at a target training and try to place you in the kind of scenarios where you would actually use your gun.

"We slam a door shut and say that was your front door being kicked in," Scheidt says. "Go make sure your child is okay."

Don't worry, the bullets are plastic and only "sting" when you're hit.

But with more and more people getting the real thing, Shoot Extreme wants to make sure they are prepared for gun ownership.

"A lot of those people are buying the guns because they're afraid they might go away but they don't have any training to go along with it," Scheidt says.

So Shoot Extreme will take you through the basics of how to load and fire or for those who have concealed carry permits they'll put you in a scenario where someone is trying to rob you and you have to see if you have time to pull your gun out.

"Is it worth them getting the weapon out or should they give the guy the wallet and be able to go home to the wife and kids at the end of the day?" Scheidt says.

Because a gun will only make you safer if you know how and when to use it.

"That's what we try to get people in the mindset of is defending their family, not their TV or their X-Box or their jewelry," Scheidt says.
