COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A former Ohio trooper has been sentenced to more than four years in prison in a mortgage fraud case and was ordered to pay lenders more than $617,000 in restitution.

Benjamin Richardson of Powell had pleaded guilty to charges accusing him of mortgage fraud, bankruptcy fraud and witness tampering. He was sentenced Monday in federal court in Columbus.

Investigators alleged he conspired to defraud mortgage lenders in transactions involving several properties. The 47-year-old Richardson also was accused of under-reporting income in a bankruptcy filing and attempting to stop a witness from talking with investigators.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Richardson told the judge he was "humiliated and disgusted" by his own actions but wasn't defined by them.

Richardson resigned from the State Highway Patrol after being indicted.
