COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Parts of Ohio got nearly a foot of snow this week, and the operators of the state's ski resorts are celebrating.

After all, last year's mild weather and lack of snow made for a tough season for some.

Greg Fisher, general manager of Mad River Mountain ski resort in western Ohio, tells The Columbus Dispatch that 10 inches of snow allowed the opening of all but one of the 24 trials Thursday. Last year, just five trails were open after Christmas.

The slopes at Boston Mills resort, between Cleveland and Akron, are opening Friday. The nearby Brandywine resort opens Saturday, and Alpine Valley in Chesterland is opening this weekend.

Other ski resorts are already open, thanks to snow-making machines. But skiers know that nothing beats the real thing.
