MONROE, Ohio (WDTN) - A fallen soldier was honored before the high school football game in Monroe.

Sgt. James C. Robinson was remembered at his alma mater's football game at Monroe High School. Robinson was part of the first graduating class in 2001, in the Monroe school district.

To honor his memory, school officials retired his soccer jersey tonight.

The flag at the football field flew at half staff. Dozens sat in the bleachers and bowed their heads, as officials announced the death of Robinson, and listed his achievements as he served the country. They observed a moment of silence in his memory.

The effect of a war being fought thousands of miles away was felt in the bleachers, and on the football field.

The 27-year old soldier was killed in the Patitka province of Afghanistan last week, when his unit was hit by indirect gunfire.

Members of the American Legion were on hand to honor Robinson's sacrifice with a fitting 21-gun salute and taps.

"What does he represent to me? The freedom that we have here in america," said First Sgt. John Paynter, of the American Legion's Post 218.

Dr. Elizabeth Lolli, the Superintendent of the Monroe Local Schools district had known Robinson since he was a child. She was the principal of the elementary school he attended, with his brother.

Lolli described him as a fun-loving guy who was had great leadership qualities, and a strong sense of patriotism and service.

"He wanted to serve and this was his third tour, so he was very, very dedicated to what he did," said Lolli.

Sgt. Robinson left behind his parents, siblings, a wife, and two young daughters.

"I am deeply sorry for their loss," said Paynter.

Sgt. Robinson's body was held up in Maryland, because of Hurricane Earl. Dover airforce base had been shut down until the winds subsided.

Robinson's funeral was expected to be held sometime next week, with a service in Middletown followed by a burial ceremony in Springboro.
