DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Like much of the last several days the first official day of summer can be summed up in one word: HOT. The high heat is caused by a large ridge of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. This high pressure area keeps storm systems from bringing much needed relief our way.
Today high temperatures will once again climb near the 90 degree mark with lots of sunshine. This will make the sixth day in a row with temperatures near 90.
The high heat and stagnant air mass is creating the perfect conditions for pollution to form. The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission has issued an Air Pollution Advisory for Clark, Miami, Greene and Montgomery counties. People with respiratory problems should take it easy while outside and head indoors when possible. During an advisory it's suggested to fill up your gas tank or mow the lawn after 6pm. This prevents gasoline vapors from mixing with the sun and creating smog.
If you plan to hit the pool to beat the heat make sure you don't forget the sunscreen and stay hydrated. Use caution when exercising. A great idea is to take your jog either early in the morning or later int he evening when temperatures are lower.
Temperatures finally drop slightly by Friday as a cold front drops from the south.
