WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) - They're experts at putting out flames, but now they're fighting something else.
"There is just not the interest there used to be out there," says Washington Township Fire Chief William Gaul.
Over the last decade Washington Township has seen a dip in volunteer firefighters.
In 2001, the department hired 27, while this past year that number was only 8. It currently has about 60 volunteers compared to 92 a decade ago.
That's meant using more full and part time people to handle the increased work load during a time when budget's are tight.
"We've had to be somewhat innovative and creative they way we staff and man our stations," Gaul says.
2 NEWS asked the chief why volunteering has dropped off.
He says part of the reason is that the economy is forcing more people to work longer hours.
"There's not a lot of time to give back to the community," Gaul says.
On top of that, Gaul tells 2 NEWS volunteering requires more work nowadays because the state has mandated more training than in the past.
"Firefighters now have to recertify every three years," Gaul says.
But the chief says what hasn't changed is the importance of having good volunteers.
In fact, he got his start by volunteering. He hopes others will consider fighting the same battle.
"We do need your help," Gaul says. "We are searching for people. If you have any time at all, we'll work with you.
If you're interested in volunteering call 433-3083.
The department will train you and you do get paid when you're called in.
