FRANKLIN, Ohio (WDTN) - An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper with the Lebanon Post was hit by a car while investigating a crash on I-75 in Franklin late Wednesday night.

Captain Paul Hermes with the OSP Wilmington post told 2 NEWS the trooper, 26-year-old Brent Hill, was out of his cruiser gathering more information on a one car accident just after 11:00 p.m. That's when 22-year-old Andrew Combs lost control of his car and hit Hill.

We're told the highway was covered in snow at the time, and that may be what caused the accident.

The three left lanes of I-75 northbound were shut down between SR 122 and SR 123 overnight. The right lane was open to drivers.

Officials reopened all lanes to traffic around 4:00 a.m.

Medics rushed Hill to Atrium Medical Center. He was later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital.

We're told he was in critical condition. Captain Hermes said Hill suffered brain trauma, and at least one of his legs was broken.

Trooper Hill was still in training. We're told he had just graduated from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy nearly three weeks ago.

48-year-old Trooper Mike Steele was Hill's field training officer. He saw the whole accident happen.

Captain Hermes said this about Trooper Steele, "Well obviously he's shaken up, as any of us would be. You know, he's training the new guy. He feels responsible for him. You see one of your brothers out there getting hurt, it's traumatic."
