Trooper lucky to be alive after chase

LEBANON, Ohio (WDTN) - A high speed chase came to an end Tuesday night, after the suspect crashed into an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser in Lebanon, just missing a trooper.

Someone in West Chester called police around 9:30 p.m. to report their car was stolen from outside their home during a test drive.

Not long after, West Chester officials spotted the car driving on Tylersville Road.

The officer followed the driver-- later identified as 21-year-old Trevon Broomfield from Dayton-- onto I-75 heading northbound, and continued as the driver exited onto State Route 63 in Monroe.

Broomfield refused to pull over, and eventually troopers laid down stop sticks.

When Broomfield tried to avoid the stop sticks, he crashed into a trooper's cruiser and flipped his car on it's top. Authorities say he missed hitting the trooper who had laid down the stop sticks by a foot.

"In this particular case, I asked her what made her get away from her patrol car," says Lt. Matt Hamilton with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. "She said she didn't feel safe being next to it so she moved away."

Officials said the chase hit speeds of up to 100 mph.

Broomfield was arrested, then taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown.

Police said he could face felony charges for vehicle theft, failure to comply, along with other traffic offenses.

The crash was still under investigation.
