SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - With heavy hearts, the Springboro High School Football Team took the field Saturday night for its playoff game against Lakota East.

Earlier in the week, one of their teammates, offensive lineman Shaun Frechette, was killed in a car crash on his way to school.

Before the game, both sides paused for a moment of silence to remember the junior.

Friends, family and classmates also released balloons in his memory.

Both student sections wore black to show their support for his family.

"That's something really special, you know, to get the cooperation from them, kind of a friendly rivalry but also supporting our community," explains senior Maverick Morgan.

His number, 70, could be seen throughout the stadium on signs, faces, ribbons and helmets.

"It just means a lot, we're just supporting a family going through some tough times," says senior Chase Kirby.

The Panther Football Family set up a memorial fund in his name at National Bank and trusts on SR-741 in Springboro to help Shaun's family with funeral expenses.

Donations were also collected at the game.

Missy McReynolds has two sons who played with Shaun on the football team, she says the worst times bring out the best in people.

"The community has been just fabulous. I mean, coming out and backing, even some of the other schools have taken up donations and brought them to our school, which I have great respect for all of those other schools trying to help us out too," comments McReynolds.

Shaun's family was in the stands for the game and had a front row seat for the show of support.

"They're wearing Shaun's jersey and I don't think they'd want to be anywhere else right now and I'm sure Shaun's with us also," explains McReynolds.

Another fundraiser  will be held at Leap Frogs Party and Play in Miamisburg on November 14th from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. The cost is $9 per child and all of the proceeds will go to the Frechette family.  You can RSVP by calling (937) 640-3345.
