Springboro boy's special wish granted

SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - A 4-year old Springboro boy just had his wish come true.

Joey Mappes has a fancy new playhouse in his backyard thanks to the Dayton chapter of the Special Wish Foundation and The Primrose Schools of Centerville.

Joey was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2011. "He's had five surgeries to remove it and we're hoping that at this point, it's gone," said Kellie Mappes, Joey's mother.

Joey's new playhouse was officially christened with a special dedication ceremony Thursday.

The Primrose Schools says helping the Special Wish Foundation with funding for the playhouse teaches their kids a valuable lesson.

"We teach the kids to give back and raise money, and be aware of those that are in need," said Hollie Cambria, Primrose Schools Owner.

Several other businesses also got involved, including Ellis Custom Homes.  Rick Inesta designed Joey's new playhouse to look like the family's actual home.

"Once we heard about his situation, it was a no-brainer," said Inesta.

The playhouse was a first of its kind for Dayton's Special Wish chapter.

"This was one of the few times we really get the opportunity to build something for a child to play with for years to come," said David Seyer, Executive Director of the Dayton Chapter.

It took some time, but the finishing touches were added to Joey's playhouse, including a poster with his favorite music group, One Direction.

Joey's parents say they're touched by the support from the community and are grateful Joey and his little sister have a new, safe place to play.
