SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - The Springboro community has come together to try and keep a longtime basketball coach on the court.

School board member, Jim Rigano, told 2 NEWS Springboro High School basketball coach, Troy Holtrey's, contract expires tomorrow.

For the first time in 21 years, Holtrey has not been renewed.  In fact, there is no guarantee he will be re-signed for next season.

Sources told 2 NEWS the Springboro School Board has decided to post the varsity men's basketball coaching position.  They said Holtrey plans to apply but, has already been warned the best person for the job will be hired.

Rigano would not comment on why Holtrey has been asked to re-apply.

However, fans and former players said they are outraged and plan to let the school board know about it.

"He didn't do anything wrong," said Jeff Kirby, a member of the Springboro Athletic Boosters. "The public sentiment would be that he is the right man for this job. In a lot of ways, he's like a boxer in a boxing ring, blind folded. He doesn't know where the punches are coming from. It's just not right. You've been here this long, to do the kind of work he does., he deserves a lot better treatment than what he's getting".

Holtrey's record with Springboro is 330 wins to 117 losses.

Supporters said they plan to attend a school board meeting on Tuesday to voice their concerns.
