CLEARCREEK TWP. (WDTN) - A Springboro High School student was killed in a single car crash Thursday morning.

Shaun Frechette, 17, lost control of his car and struck a pole on SR 741 around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of West Pekin Road, according to Clearcreek Township Police.

Medics were called, but Frechette was pronounced dead at the scene,

Investigators believe he was on his way to school when the accident happened.

As soon as school officials learned of the death, high school principal Dr. Ron Malone and his staff and worked with police to ensure that the district’s crisis plan was followed.

“This is a sad time for our school district. We will do everything we can to bring comfort and support to our school community," said  Todd Petrey, District Superintendent. "Our kids come first. As all who knew Shaun come to terms with this, our priority is on their healing and understanding in the days, weeks and months to come.”

Petrey said counselors will be available to students and staff today and for the next several days.

Frechette was a football player, and Petrey said his staff is "keenly aware of the special bonds on that team as well."

The accident happened on a stretch of road just south of the high school.  Because of the crash, officials had to close that section of SR 741 for several hours. No other vehicles were involved.
