LEBANON, Ohio (WDTN) - It was a stormy night in the Miami Valley. A tornado warning was in effect on Friday evening, but water did most of the damage.
The storm dumped a lot of rain in a short time. Many residents to the South of Dayton, in Warren County were left with a big mess to clean up after a flash flood swept through the West Street area of Lebanon.
Within minutes creeks overflowed, and spilled onto neighborhood hood streets, washing away a bridge.
The murky waters crept into people's homes on West Street.
David Hatfield said he had been sleeping and woke up to find waters creeping through his kitchen door. He had to be rescued from his own home.
"Creek was up to the back door, the front door and whole yard was covered. It was beating up against my truck," said Hatfield.
A few doors down, Deborah Hess and Jeff Burns came home to a mess as well.
They had gone shopping for May flowers, but the spring showers ended up costing a whole lot more.
"The police and fire department told us to check our basement and it's 3-4 inches of water in the basement. The furnace is under water," said Hess.
The fire department had gone from door to door in the area, checking on residents. They asked some of them to evacuate until things dried up.
"I just hope it's over now," said Burns.
