SIDNEY, Ohio (WDTN) - The dreaded "butt dial" did a number on a would-be burglar in Shelby County. So says the county sheriff.
Sheriff John Lenhart says it all went down Wednesday night in Sidney, starting with an emergency 911 call.
A dispatcher realized it was a call from a cell phone and feared the worst, sending deputies to a home in the 500 block of Miami River Road in Sidney.
Investigators say Douglas Wolaver made the call as he broke a window to get inside the house. He didn't dial directly. His cell phone was in his pocket and his butt did the dialing.
Deputies arrived at the house to find the window broken and the suspect hiding inside. The cell phone even gave away his hiding spot. The phone was beeping due to a low battery. So, what did the deputies do? They followed the sound and got their man.
Sheriff Lenhart said the last time his deputies had to work "that hard" to solve a crime was when a suspect left his wallet behind.
Wolaver now faces several charges.
