Eaton's 'Squeagle' at center of fierce debate

Football logo may not be part of new complex

EATON, Ohio (WDTN) - Parents and students in one Preble County city are fighting for the symbol of the high school football team.

Supporters of the football team's eagle logo showed up at the Eaton School Board Meeting Monday night, expressing concern about the symbol's future.

The "squeagle" as the football team calls it,  is not being included in plans for the new sports complex as of now.

The board president says it's because more sports teams will use the new facility than just the football team.

"There's been much discussion over what that should be, whether it's an eagle, or an e, or whatever, that has not been decided, but we wanted it to favor everyone, not just one team or one group of people," said Joe Renner, School Board President.

Others argued that the "squeagle" is a tradition that needs to take it's place in the new complex.

"I've painted the squeagle on the football field since the mid-nineties and I've never before had to go to the school board to get approval.  I talked to the athletic director and the boosters people and I put it on," said Robert Davis, Eaton resident.

The board will have to make a decision within a month, so plans for the new sports complex can be finalized.
