DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Students will get a lesson in sidewalk safety as they head to school Wednesday morning.

More than one thousand schools across the country participate in International Walk to School Day, including several schools in the Miami Valley.

The goal is to help create a safer walking environment for all children.

Safe Kids Greater Dayton is is teaming up with Dayton Children's Medical Center, and hundreds of FedEx volunteers to give children a lesson in pedestrian safety.

Road traffic injuries are actually the leading cause of death in children ages 3 to 14, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

More than 61 children are injured every day, and more than 500 children are killed every year.

This is the 13th year the Safe Kids organization has helped kids walk to school.

The volunteers are going to be pointing out dangerous intersections, streets that need sidewalks, and places where people have been hit or almost hurt by vehicles.
