Boy helps deputies get homicide suspect

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) - A 10-year-old helped lead deputies to a homicide suspect Thursday morning, after two people were shot to death inside an apartment in Harrison Township.

Dead are Carly Hughley, 32, and Demetrius Beckwith, 29.

The shooting happened just before 1a.m. at the Catalpa Crossing apartments in the 100 block of Turner Road.

Investigators said Hughley lived at the apartments. Beckwith's address has not been released.

Deputies say Hughley's 10-year-old son is the one who ran next door to get help.

"He witnessed his mother being shot and I don't think the suspect seen him there or who knows what would have happened," says Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer.

The 10-year-old helped lead deputies to 34-year-old Harvey Jones by giving them a name and a vehicle description.

He was arrested about five hours after the shooting at a place on Homewood Avenue.

The sheriff says Jones is a convicted sex offender and just finished serving a 10-year prison sentence for rape a little less than a year ago.

"Once again we go back to a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history causing more violence," Plummer says. "We need to hold these people accountable who have records and shouldn't have guns."

Deputies say Jones had been with Hughley in the past, but they are still investigating what triggered the shooting.

"We don't know if it's a domestic or what the true motive is but they did know each other," Plummer says.

Those living at the Catalpa Crossing apartments didn't want to go on camera with us but say they're shocked by what happened. 

Their concerns are now with a 10-year old who in the midst of tragedy did his best.

"He provided us the information we needed to get this guy off the street, Plummer says.

Deputies will meet with prosecutors Friday to decide on charges for Jones.
