DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - University of Dayton basketball fans received some startling news Wednesday.
The team's most rugged big man, Matt Kavanaugh, is suspended for the season.
The Flyers were counting on Kavanaugh, a 6' 9" senior from Centerville, to be a force as their starting center.
He is now accused of violating the UD Standards of Behavior and Code of Conduct".
School leaders are not offering up many details of exactly how Kavanaugh violated that code.
They did say the news was "quite a jolt" and said they told Kavanaugh of their decision Wednesday morning. They described the meeting as "emotional and personal".
UD Head Men's Basketball Coach, Archie Miller seemed pretty shocked when we spoke with him. He said Kavanaugh's teammates are equally stunned.
Miller also said Kavanaugh's suspension puts quite a burden on the two seniors on his team who must now provide leadership.
Miller would not speculate on Kavanaugh's long term future at UD. The Flyers play their first regular season game November 10.
We're told a group of men told police that three suspects opened fire at them.
