DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - University of Dayton students head back to class Wednesday and many are taking a Troy woman's accident at Ohio State to heart.
Students we talked to Tuesday evening say crosswalks are helpful, but you have to pay attention.
"It's scary to know that something could happen that easily, just like on a campus like this."
Troy native Rachel Stump was seriously hurt when she was hit by a car on Ohio State's campus earlier this week and students on UD's campus are being extra cautious.
"Obviously when you're crossing the street and that types of stuff, you should look because you never know whose driving and sometimes they drive really fast around here," said Kevin Bell, UD Senior.
Nearby construction makes it even more dangerous.
"The sidewalks are narrow or under construction so you have to be a little more careful and cars parked along the streets so you have to make sure that you're not walking into those, so you have to keep an eye out."
Angela Funk and Kaitlyn Apking are freshmen. They just moved in a few days ago and have already had a close call.
"The other day we were walking and almost got hit by a car on Brown Street. They weren't even paying attention. Drivers don't always pay attention so you have to be, because you're the one on foot," said Funk.
And the roommates stick together in order to stay safe.
"Always walk with a buddy because they may see something that you don't and they may be more aware of something around you that you're not," said Kaitlyn Apking.
They say technology can be a big distraction and have a warning for fellow students. "Be careful, look where you're going. Don't text. That's one thing, don't look down and text. You won't be paying attention, you could be texting and then you could get hit by a car."
