UD dedicates tree to writer's memory

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Dayton native and well known humorist Erma Bombeck's memory will live on at the University of Dayton campus. The 1949 graduate was honored with the planting of a tree in a special ceremony April 21.

Dozens gathered outside St. Mary's hall to take part in the tribute to the writer famously known for her newspaper columns chronicling suburban family life.

"'What a great legacy to have the tree planted here and remind people of what my mom did and her connection with the university," her son, Andy Bombeck said. "Hopefully the tree will be there a long time. It's a fantastic legacy for my mom and my family."

Her husband, Bill Bombeck, shared a few words, ending with how much this would mean to his late wife. "She would have something cute, something smart to say, he said.

Also in attendance were many deeply inspired by the woman. The ceremony was held during the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop. The biannual event brought more than 300 people from 37 different states to the university campus.

"I live in Boston, Mass. and I've always wanted to come to this workshop," said Nancy Mims. "I actually graduated from the University of Dayton. I've always wanted to come. I'm very proud of Erma. I grew up reading her columns and loving her work.
