BUTLER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) - This has been one strange year for the apple crop; between the drought and the freeze, it just took its toll, said manager Glen Monin of Monin Fruit Farms in Butler Township.
Estimates on Monday showed this year's apple crop is shaping up as the smallest since 1986, down 14% from 2011.
The problem started back in April after warm temperatures arrived in the Miami Valley too early. "One night it got down to 27 degrees and just burnt the skin on the apple so you can see how it affected it. The summer drought didn't help," said Monin.
Most of Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and even parts of west Virginia are reporting problems with apple yields.
Monin Farms is located at 8201 Frederick Pike in Butler Township.
