Teacher suspended after assault claim

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Montgomery County sheriff deputies are investigating accusations that a Dayton teacher struck a 16-year old student who is confined to a wheelchair.

No charges have been filed so far, but investigators expect them.

The disabled teen's mother says that no one from the school has talked to her since the incident Wednesday, October 10, 2012.

Tamikio Burrage's 16-year-old son has limited verbal skills. Investigators say he was communicating with a teacher in the school cafeteria when she struck him twice in the shoulder. That 41-year-old teacher is now suspended, but hasn't been arrested or charged.

Burrage says she hasn't sent her son back to school since the incident.

"If you send your kid to school, you expect them to be safe, not in danger and my son was in danger," said Tamikio Burrage, boy's mother.

"You can clearly see the teen is frustrated with her and it appears he may be flailing. The child is handicapped, but he can't cause harm. It's very minimal," said Major David Hale, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators expect that the teacher will be charged, but exactly what charges is unclear.

The vicitm's mother says she is plans to hire an attorney.
