Sweating red, white and blue at parade

CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) - Everybody loves the band, but on Wednesday there was a slightly sweeter sound in Centerville, the calls of those selling water.

The Americana Festival was dripping with patriotism and sweat, as fans were waved as often as flags and water for a dollar was the hottest thing going.

"Ice is the biggest commodity today," says Marion Delatore, who was selling water for the Centerville Education Foundation.

Many spent this Independence Day searching for their freedom from the heat.

Marching in it too long could make anyone a little unsteady.

Some found shade using whatever they could, while others simply cooked, like those running the grills.

"You have to go from the time the whistle blows until the time the whistle lets you off," says Mickey Albin with the Blackjack Grill.

But no matter how hot it got, they refused to go bust at the grill.

Others like those at The Castle, a center for adults who experience mental disorders, found their own way to stay afloat by selling root beer floats.

The war on this day may have been against the heat, but no one forgot those who fought the real battles.

"It's wonderful to see the parade and honor everybody fighting for the country," says Lori Fussnecker. "It's a wonderful day."

The Fussneckers should know. They never miss a parade and this year they have some company.

"This is Mackenzie's first year," Lori says.

You can bet it will be seared into her memory. The heat made sure of that.
