DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A stand-off in a Dayton neighborhood ended in tragedy Monday.
SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Team were dispatched to 1514 Cornell Drive around 6 p.m. on reports a suicidal man had barricaded himself in his home.
The man's wife made the initial call to 911. Investigators said she was at home when she discovered her husband in an upstairs room with a gun, threatening to commit suicide. The woman told police as she was leaving the house she thought she may have heard the gun fire.
The Dayton Police Department and the SWAT team shut down Cornell Drive and evacuated all nearby residents, including a nearby daycare as a safety precaution.
The team finally made entry into the house around 9 p.m.. Police said they found the man with a self-inflicted, fatal gun shot wound. Investigators believe the man did in fact kill himself as his wife was leaving the home.
The man's name has not been released, but police said he was 59-years-old.
The incident remains under investigation.
