DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - 2012 was an exciting year for employees at Standard Register as they celebrated being in business in the Dayton Region for 100 years.

Joe Morgan, President and CEO of the Standard Register Company says this isn't your father's company anymore.

"I think it's time for us to tear the walls down and really think about doing business very, very differently," Morgan said.

Senior Vice President Joe Klenke has seen tremendous change in his 25 years with Standard Register.

Klenke said, "there is a lot less heavy manufacturing going on and a lot more rapid innovation and communication around the software side of the business."

What founders John and William Sherman started 100 years ago with registers and receipts has evolved into a major marketing services and electronic document management company serving an impressive list of clients including 50 of Forbes top 100 companies.

But they hold onto their roots with their labeling facility still located on Albany Street near I-75, supplying state-of-the-art labeling for a variety of clients, like these recognizable Red Box labels for McDonald's.

"On a personal level I think Standard Register's reputation with it's clients is rock solid," Morgan said. "They're interested in what we have to say and in fact they are interested in our future success.

Restructuring costs have caused a decline in earnings but through the first nine months of 2012, the company reported revenue of $458.4 million and a net loss of $8.9 million as their workforce has reduced down to to 2200 people nationwide.

But, according to Morgan, changes necessary to remain nimble in a changing industry.

"The people of our company have tremendous pride in what they do and you can't fake passion."
