DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Southwest Airlines took flight Sunday, offering direct flights from Dayton to Denver International Airport.
Southwest bought out Airtran Airways in 2011, and Sunday marked the first flight with new personnel and aircraft.
On Sunday the airline held a gate celebration for customers and employees. The celebration included food, refreshments, and giveaways.
The airline now has one daily non-stop flight from Dayton to Denver, the fastest growing city in the Southwest market. Denver is the fifth largest city in the Southwest system.
Previously, travelers were forced to go to Columbus, Indianapolis, or Louisville to catch a Southwest flight.
Southwest serves 76 cities in 38 states. The airline operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has more than 46,000 employees.
