DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - 2News got a first look inside a new cancer center in the Miami Valley that is set to open in 2013.

MVHS Comprehensive Cancer Center will be open to patients on January 24, 2013.

Hospital officials hosted a hard hat tour to showcase the latest in cancer treatment and care in the Greater Dayton area.

"Its the only one of its kind south of Dayton," said MVH President/CEO Bobbie Gerhart.

The five-story, 93,000 square-foot facility includes the TruBeam linear accelerator that provides advanced radiation technology for patients in need of extremely precise treatment for fighting cancerous tumors.

"The linear accelerator is in a vault room on the first floor," said Greg Morris, who is the Project Manager for Danis-Wise's construction team.  "The walls are eight-feet thick to prevent any radiation leakage."

The tour also highlighted a healing garden visible from infusion spaces.

"The theme for this center is 'Hope'," said Gerhart.  "Hope is a significant part of a cancer patient's healing process."

Officials said the center cost $20-million to construct.  It has been under construction since groundbreaking in October 2011.

The public will be able to tour the facility on January 19.  Stick with 2News for further details.
