FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN) - Thousands of runners laced up their shoes for the 16th Annual Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Marathon Saturday morning.

Over 15,000 people gathered from around the world at the Air Force Museum to participate in the full-marathon, wheelchair, half-marathon, 10K, and 5K races.

The marathon course is a 26.2 mile run that traverses historical places on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, including the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, and the Wright Brothers Memorial Monument.

Each runner who crossed the finish line was presented with a commemorative finisher's medal. Along with the medallions, there were over 350 uniquely designed awards presented to over-all and age category winners.

After the first runner crossed the finish line, a post-race festival kicked off. Family, friends, runners, volunteers, and spectators came out to join in the celebration.

An after-party at the Greene will also take place Saturday afternoon starting at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Folks will have a chance to listen to live music, meet up with other runners, and enjoy food and beverages.

The marathon is held the third Saturday in September each year in celebration of the U.S. Air Force.

The Air Force Marathon course is certified by the USA Track and Field Association and is a Boston Qualifier.
