KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) - What was supposed to be a rally Tuesday turned into a hurricane relief event, led by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Romney addressed the crowd, many of whom brought canned goods and other donations to Trent Arena in Kettering, saying he was proud of the city.

“I have to tell you, I’m proud of you in Dayton to show up in such large numbers…” Romney said.

“It’s part of the American Spirit…the American Way to give to those in need,” Romney remarked. “You make the difference you can.”

He told a story dating back to his high school days where he and a small group of students were told to clean up the football field after a big game. Romney told the crowd that the group formed a strategy to make the biggest impact they could.

He urged those listening to collect canned goods and drop them off at his campaign offices or, to write a check to the American Red Cross.

After his brief remarks, Romney began bagging and boxing canned goods in preparation to have them delivered to New Jersey.
