Preparing roads for icy mix
ODOT crews ready for weather

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Traffic is smooth sailing now but by Friday morning rough waters may slow you down. The Ohio Department of Transportation has been watching the weather forecast and are treating the roads with brine.
Mandi Abner ODOT Public Information Officer says, "It's a mixture of salt and water we spray that on the pavement before the storm hits and that is suppose to help the ice or snow from adhering to the pavement."
Brine creates a white sheen that is already present on some of the major interstates. Treating before the event doesn't always work for every storm but since the pavement is dry now the hope is this extra measure will go along way by Friday morning.
While every storm is unique ODOT is watching the radar closely and already has crews in place and on standby.
"They could be working as long as it takes - we will give them breaks and change them out they do know they will be working until the roads are clear," explains Abner.
Abner says ice is always a bit tougher for crews. It's hard to see and and makes it very difficult for plow drivers.
"Snow plows are not immune to the weather conditions. either so if it comes down as ice rather than snow they go a little slower and it hinders what they can do," says Abner.
