TROTWOOD, Ohio (WDTN) - The flags fly at half-staff outside the Trotwood Police Department.

The sun setting on them and on a life well-lived.

"Dave was just one of those people who makes a big impression and leaves a big impression," says Trotwood Police Captain John Porter.

Trotwood Police officers have carried heavy hearts with them on patrol this week, ever since the news of Officer Dave Yaney's death Wednesday from a crash into a ravine off Taywood Road.

"It's been a rough couple days," Porter says.

On that fateful morning, Yaney was headed to work.

It was a place he loved to be.

"He was a public servant and always has been," Porter says.

You can see the impact he's had just by looking at the memorial on the bridge where he lost his life.

The many visitors paying their respects to a man who spent his life watching out for others, whether it be in the boy scouts, the army or finally the police force.

"That's who Dave was," Porter says. "He cared about the community and he was about the community."

And it's the community that will miss him. As even the flags seem to waive their goodbyes in the wind.

"He's been a fixture here in Trotwood," Porter says. "He was born and raised here in Trotwood. Many know him as a family member and a friend."

Yaney's funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Phillips Temple Church in Trotwood.
