One person killed, three injured in two accidents Sunday

BROOKVILLE-CLAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Ohio State Patrol is investigating two accidents that happened within several miles and hours of one another on I-70 in Montgomery county Sunday. 

The first accident happened west of milemarker 26 near the Clayton- Brookville line around 4:30 p.m.. Sunday.

Troopers said a husband and wife from Pennsylvania were traveling east on the interstate in their SUV with a camper in tow when the driver lost control.

"The SUV and camper spun out of control and into the median," said Sgt. Chris Colbert with OSP, Dayton post.  "The camper landed on its side and the SUV landed on its top in the westbound lanes.

Troopers said the man was ejected from the SUV and killed before medics arrived.  The woman was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police initially reported the woman was driving; however, investigators claimed they received conflicting reports and have not confirmed as of Sunday night who was in fact behind the wheel.

A cause remains under investigation; however, witnesses told police it appeared the camper came unhooked from the SUV.

The man has not been identified.

Traffic was slowed to one lane in both directions for several hours while crews cleared the accident.

Then, at approximately 8:15 p.m. Sunday and several miles west at milemarker 21 in Brookville, another accident occurred on 70 east.

Troopers said traffic was at a standstill due to the fatal accident when an SUV rear-ended a tanker.

"It appeared the driver of the SUV hit the tanker at highway speeds," said Lt. Mark Nichols with OSP, Dayton post.  "Its unclear why."

The impact caused the SUV to catch fire and both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle.

"The male driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and his female passenger suffered critical injuries," said Lt. Nichols.  "Both were rushed to Miami Valley Hospital."

The driver of the tanker was not injured. 

The east lanes were shut down for about an hour while crews cleared the scene.  Traffic reopened just after 10 p.m.. Sunday.
