DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - New information about a chase and crash that sent suspects and officers alike to the hospital.
It happened around 1:30 Thursday morning during a shooting investigation on Whaley Street in Trotwood. Witnesses identified a car they thought was involved and officers gave chase. It ended suddenly when the suspects and two cruisers rammed a tree downed in recent storms.
Trotwood Police now say the shooting and the chase were two separate incidents.
While the driver of the car is behind bars at the Montgomery County Jail, investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.
Dashcam video just released Only to 2 NEWS, shows a Dayton police officer following the suspect's car through the streets.
"Dayton police officers received information that Trotwood was in pursuit of a vehicle that was actually stolen from our city," comments Dayton Police Lt. Eric Henderson.
After about 15 minutes, the chase ended in Harrison Township after the suspect's car and two police cruisers crash into a huge tree that fell on Catalpa Drive.
"He never saw the tree. When he hit that tree it was like an explosion, just took everything out all at once," said Dayton Police Sgt. Matthew Dickey.
Montgomery County Sheriff's Department volunteers narrowly avoided the crash. They were on the scene directing traffic around the fallen tree.
"He came from the other side and my buddy got out of the way, guy came blowing by going," says Vaughn Beams.
The five teens in the car were treated for minor injuries and taken into custody. The two Dayton Police officers were taken to the hospital. They've since been treated and released.
"I believe the airbags deployed, may have helped them significantly, I believe everybody was wearing seatbelts, so everybody was safe because of that, but it absolutely could have been much much worse so we're very thankful for that," said Sgt. Dickey.
Trotwood Police now say the car was stolen and that's why the driver took off. The 18-year-old driver is still in jail facing several charges. 4 other juveniles in the car were released.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are also now involved in various aspects of the case.
Trotwood officers are still looking for the gunman in the original shooting on Whaley.
