Local Boy Scout chapters not discussing gay ban

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Boy Scouts of America will wait until May to vote on dropping or keeping gay ban.

Douglas Nelson is the Scout Executive for the Miami Valley Council, Boy Scouts Of America.  He's living his dream of inspiring young men through the Boy Scouts Of America.

"The boy scouts are founded on the principles in the scout oath and law. Duty to God and country.  Duty to self.  Duty to others," said Nelson.

Nelson said everyone is welcome to join, despite the current ban.

"The Boy Scouts don't proactively ask about sexual orientation of any of its members or volunteers. We are focused on serving young people and when sexual orientation enters into our program, is when we have a problem," said Nelson

Nelson said leaders do not discuss the ban that excludes gay members and leaders with members or their parents.  A decision whether to keep the ban in place or end it was to be made today.  Leaders postponed the vote until May.

"I think that delaying the vote allows us to have a much more meaningful dialogue and discussion from representatives  from all over the country so we can make a better more meaningful decision later," said Nelson.
