DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Back to school supplies are no longer limited to books and backpacks.

Students today, are armed with electronics that can be easily stolen and expensive to replace.

"Those items for students are a requirement," said Cindy Antrican with AAA Miami Valley. "They are not a luxury. The children need those items in order to go to school".

Antrican said with the right insurance protecting your student is simple. If your child lives in a dorm on campus,  your homeowner's policy most likely covers up to 10% of the personal property coverage. Students living off campus, should carry renters insurance. Antrican said most insurance companies require the student's name be on the lease.

2 NEWS talked with Sinclair student Emily Meredith. Meredith said her name is not on her apartment lease, but her parents take care of her insurance.

If Emily were not covered and something were to happen, she said it would be a big financial blow. "I honestly have no idea what I would do," said Meredith.

That's why Antrican said is so important to think about insurance, before it's too late. She said a quick call to your agent could save a lot of headaches later on.

"I don't know that too many parents, in hustle and bustle of trying to get the kids packed up and ready to go, who think about it," added Antrican. "I think it's a good idea to remind them that these things are important".

Every insurance policy is different, so if you have any questions you should contact your insurance provider or AAA at 888-222-9407.
