Hundreds of jobs riding on rail line

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - More than 260 jobs are riding on repairs to a rail line.

Three companies use the Dayton-owned rails, which run along Wolf Creek in the northwest part of the city and are an offshoot of a main CSX line, but to keep those tracks up to code is going to take about $600,000.

2 NEWS found out $200,000 of that amount will be in the form of a state grant approved Wednesday by city commissioners.

City leaders are still working to get other funds to keep the city's cost for the project down.

The rail line carries about 430 cars a year, but more importantly it already carried one business, NVR to Dayton last year.

"The rail line was really important for them as a site decision and that was one of the reasons why years ago the city invested in and acquired that line," says Asst. City Manager Shelley Dickstein.

Officials hope the tracks will one day ship other jobs Dayton's way.

The repairs are expected to start sometime next year.
