DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Dayton firefighters battled an explosive house fire late Tuesday afternoon.

Flames broke out at a home on Cornell Drive near Otterbein Avenue around 5:45 pm.

Firefighters say two men live in the home.  They were in the middle of some electrical work in the house when the fire broke out.  Investigators say they started a smaller fire several weeks ago.  This fire pretty much destroyed the place.

Firefighters were also dodging some canisters that were exploding in the flames.  They aren't sure exactly what was exploding.  Nearby propane tanks also posed a threat.

"We had reports that there were some propane tanks inside, so we did hear some explosions, small ones, hard to say what it could have been, ammunition, aerosol cans, it's really hard to say," said District Chief James Rose, Dayton Fire Department.

Both men got out safely.  The Red Cross is helping them with a place to stay.
