Help getting your home ready for winter

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The day is shaping up as a sunny one, but that's not the reason why Patricia Mattison is feeling all warm inside.

Instead it has more to do with that noise coming from her sidewalk.

"This is beautiful," Patricia says.

Patricia has lived in her Kipling Drive home for more than 30 years, but the warm and inviting downstairs hides some cold hard truths upstairs.

"I love this little home," Patricia says. "I just decorate it. It may not look like a lot of flaws but there's a lot of flaws.

Among them, insulation that would have a hard time keeping a fire warm, but that's where Project TEEM or Teaching Energy Efficiency Measures comes in.

"We've helped many homeowners save a lot of money and use less energy," says John Bennett with Community Action Partnership, which runs the program along with Vectren.

Through the program the two are combing to give people up to $6,500 in weatherization for their home.

You qualify if you make 300 percent of the poverty line or less. For a family of four, that's just more than $69,000 a year.

Over the last eight years the program has helped more than 3,000 people.

"It's a great feeling," Bennett says. "We do have customers who will write us letters and say they appreciate what's been done for them and how much more comfortable their house is."

For Patricia the help means new, thicker insulation in her attic and a winter not spent wrapped in blankets.

"I'm so thrilled to have things done," she says.
