DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A big crowd gathered at Welcome Stadium on Friday, but they weren't sports fans.
Dozens of families lined up, looking to put food on the dinner table for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Ohio farmers donated about 75,000 pounds of food for the free farmer's market on Friday. One-hundred volunteers handed out reusable grocery bags donated from Walmart. Foodbank officials estimated about 1,000 families from Montgomery, Greene, and Preble Counties benefited from the farmer's market.
For a lot of families, it's very difficult to access fresh fruits and vegetables, said Rosemary Dannin, the community relations manager for the Dayton Foodbank.
In early November, the Ohio Association of Foodbanks reported distribution is up 45% in 2012.
