HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WDTN) - Several families are out of their homes after a two-alarm fire broke out Monday night in their Harrison Township apartment building.
The first firefighters arrived on the scene in the 3300 block of Lodge Avenue around 8 p.m. and promptly requested a second round of firefighters respond to the scene.
A neighbor told 2 NEWS he heard an explosion as the fire started and thought it was a wreck on the nearby interstate.
It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control.
Several residents, neighbors and Montgomery County Sherriff’s Deputies attempted to save family pets, but firefighters say a dog and a cat perished in the blaze.
Firefighers tell 2 NEWS the fire was contained to the unit where it started, but other units in the building suffered heavy smoke damage.
The Purple Passion 5K run/walk was held at Shawnee Park Saturday afternoon.
