DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The federal investigation into the death of Kylen English was closed Friday, just more than a year after his death.

“There is insufficient evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights charges against Dayton, Ohio, Police Department or Montgomery County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Office personnel,” the Justice Department said in a written statement.

Federal officials met with the English family and community leaders to deliver their findings following the 20-year-olds July 16, 2011 death.

English, 20, died after jumping off the Salem Avenue bridge in Dayton.

He was in police custody after investigators said he attempted to break into a home. English was taken to the Montgomery County Jail where officials said he intentionally slammed his head into a wall.

English was then taken to Grandview Medical Center where he was treated and released back into the custody of Dayton police. While en route to the jail, police said English smashed his head through a window of the police cruiser, escaped and jumped off the Salem Avenue bridge to his death.

The federal investigation found “There is a lack of evidence to contradict the medical examiner’s finding that English committed suicide or to support the allegations of misconduct by law enforcement that surfaced following Mr. English’s death. Accordingly, the department has closed this investigation without prosecution.”
