DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The family of a murdered sheriff's deputy is asking for help to keep his killer behind bars.
In May of 1975, Deputy Randal Richter was checking out a suspicious vehicle on Grant Avenue in Dayton when he was shot point-blank in the face. The 23-year-old had been with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for just 18 months.
Donald Green pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, to avoid the death penalty. Now 65, Green has spent the past 37 years behind bars.
He was denied parole five years ago, but another hearing was scheduled for November.
Friday, Deputy Richter's family asked the community to help keep Green in prison.
