DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - An early morning house fire destroys a Dayton home after crews are forced to pull back.

Officials found a duplex consumed by flames at 53 Dover St., near the Clover Street intersection.

Flames quickly spread through the attic of the house to the other half of the duplex at 55 Dover St.

The roof and chimney collapsed while crews worked to extinguish the fire, forcing firefighters to go on the defensive.

No one was home at the time the blaze broke out just before 3 a.m., a neighbor heard a loud boom and alerted nearby residents.

The home is considered a "total loss" and the cause remains under investigation.
