Dark chapter comes to an end with plea

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A man was sentenced Friday to 25 years to life in prison after admitting to having sex with a child who was brought to him by the child's adopted father.

Patrick Rieder's sentencing ended what has been one of the most disturbing cases in Montgomery County's history.

As part of an agreement, Rieder pleaded guilty to raping a child and many other counts involving child pornography.

Afterward prosecutors talked about what they found that made them wonder what else Rieder was capable of doing.

"Hand-written notes by the defendant Rieder with instructions on how to kidnap a young boy for sexual gratification," is how Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck described them.

Heck says he's not sure if Rieder would've ever carried out something like that, but adds that what he did do is troubling enough as it is.

"When you get a case like this it's heinous," Heck says.

Prosecutor's say it started with Kenneth Brandt who offered his three adopted children to Rieder and another man Jason Zwick for sex.

Brandt is serving a 60 years to life sentence from Miami County where he lives and agreed to 50 years to life in Montgomery County where he took the child to have sex with Rieder.

He'll be officially sentenced there later this month.

Meanwhile, Zwick was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison last month in Miami County.

Prosecutors say this case should be a wake up call for all of us to keep something like this from happening again.

"It takes the entire community to be involved in child abuse cases and to ask yourself, 'Do you have the courage to report child abuse and help protect our children?'" Heck says.

Brandt's adopted children are being taken care of by Miami County Children's Services, which is trying to find them good homes.
