Kettering, OHIO (WDTN) - Today, July 16, Mound Laser and Photonics Center will break ground on a new four million dollar building that will be constructed in the Miami Valley Research Park in Kettering.

In the past 10 years, The Miamisburg-based company has expanded from five to 40 employees.

The new, 20-thousand square-foot building will provide laser-based machining services to the medical, defense and aerospace industries.

The groundbreaking takes place this morning at 10. The building is expected to be open by early spring 2013.

Also in regional business news, officials at Appleton Papers say their proposed 675-million dollar merger is off.

In May, the West Carrollton-based paper company reported they were in an agreement with a Texas-based company.

Appleton's C-E-O announced over the weekend that market conditions have prevented a deal from being struck.

The effect of the failed merger on employees at the West Carrollton plant is still unknown.
